Now, Spotify is taking a 31.4 million hit in discontinuing the project but continues selling Car Thing at a significant discount to clear out inventory and recoup some of the cost. It was effectively a Spotify player for cars that didn't have streaming functionality, and served as an informative experiment for the company. The release includes updated software allowing customers to see incoming calls on their mobile devices immediately. You can still buy the Car Thing for $50 (down from the usual $90) as of this writing. The device costs 90 and features the latest 'Hey'-based voice command. The Spotify Car Thing was made available in February 2022. The company said it still "unlocked helpful learnings" from the device despite its brief history, and that the car remained an "important place" for audio. It was initially made available on an invite-only basis in April 2021 before Spotify opened up a public wait list to buy the accessory in October.
